Shehzad’s maiden ton takes Pakistan to series win

It came after almost 2 years (17 years in New Zealand) but it came amidst the usual Pakistani rallying chant of “Pakistan Zindabad, Pakistan Zindabad, Pakistan Zindabad”. Led by the impressive and confident young opener Ahmed Shehzad, Pakistan beat New Zealand in the 5th ODI here at Hamilton to claim the series 3-1 with one to play.
What did come time and time again in the series was a consistent performance from at least one of the Pakistani opener and this time it was the 19 year old Shehzad, who went on to score his maiden ODI century and laid a solid platform for the Pakistani big-hitting lower order. That they were unable to properly take advantage of it is another story.
After winning the toss, Ross Taylor who was captaining the side decided to bowl first to take advantage of the overcast conditions and during the first 4 overs it looked like a good decision when some tidy bowling kept Pakistani openers at bay. Mohammad Hafeez who has finally started to fulfill his potential broke free with a couple of boundaries but soon found his way back to the pavilion after he played an uppish shot to mid-off where he was caught.
Hafeez’s dismissal emboldened the young gun from Lahore and he counterattacked in brilliant fashion while wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Yet another streaky innings by Kamran Akmal came to an end soon when he only had himself to blame for his run out. Younis Khan the elder statesmen flattered to deceive but fell to a top-edge while playing a sweep shot.
Uber-confident Shehzad smacks one

Nothing bothered Shehzad though and he continued his merry ways by easily picking singles and putting away bad deliveries and raced to the nervous 90’s. The 19 year old played some wonderful cut shots of the Kiwi medium pacers and anything short was dispatched to the midwicket boundary. Instead of faltering under pressure he launched Bennet to a 6 over cow corner and reached his maiden ton with swagger.
After he fell the Pakistani lower order struggled to put bat on ball and where once 300 looked like a possibility Pakistan only managed to make 268 in their allotted 50 overs with captain Afridi, Umer Akmal & Misbah pitching in with cameos.
New Zealand got off to the most horrendous of starts when Ryder was run-out without facing a delivery on the first ball of the innings. Martin Guptill along with Jamie How fought back for a while but when Wahab Riaz removed How for 12 after a painful innings, NZ hopes were delivered a big blow.
Stand in Captain Ross Taylor and Guptill managed to keep the scoreboard ticking and seemed to have built a good partnership but when Guptill fell to a short delivery from Akhtar against the run of play, New Zealand were 112-3.
Taylor was the only stiff resistance Pakistan faced and when Afridi removed him New Zealand had resigned to their fate and folded quickly afterwards leaving Pakistan ecstatic at an ODI series win after 2 years.
The series win comes at a crucial time when the world cup is only two weeks away. Things are finally looking rosy for Pakistan as the whole unit is pitching in with consistent performances day in day out. Everyone has stood up and made themselves count over the course of the series win and that is something we don’t usually associate with Pakistan. The biggest positive has been the good fielding and catching with the young blood inspiring the old legs to be more alert in the field.
The biggest positive in my opinion however is the passion the team is displaying. It is genuinely looking like the team is enjoying out there in the field and the team culture which has often been Pakistan’s undoing on many previous occasions is looking solid.
One can easily figure it out the way our boys celebrated the win out there in the middle, with their faces brimming with confidence and contentment. The only thing left now is the captaincy announcement, and there should be no doubt on who should get the honor of leading Team Green in the upcoming mega event.

Predict The World Cup?

The glory of 1992 was an unforgettable achievement under Imran Khan's captaincy on the 25th of March that year. One wonders and dreams if Pakistan can repeat such a feat on the 2nd of April 2011? An outside chance is a possibility and a team not be underestimated is what I feel are the chances of the men in green. Above all, anything but a repeat of 2003 and 2007 is something which needs to be prevented as a matter of expectation.

Pakistan effectively only need to beat Canada, Kenya and Zimbabwe to progress to the quarter finals in the World Cup. They can actually afford to lose to Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia without harming their prospects of reaching the knock out stages as long as they beat the minnows. Nonetheless, you'll expect them to beat New Zealand and if they could win their encounter against either Australia or Sri Lanka as well, that will put them in an excellent position to get the momentum, psychological edge and in-form confidence to deliver when it matters. Also, will give them an easier fixture in the quarter final against a lesser in form outfit. There are absolutely no excuses for not reaching the quarter finals. Reaching the semis should be the target and where I think they will be, come 26th March! The tournament structure certainly suits Pakistan as it is all about easing your way into it and peaking at the right time. In short, a very open World Cup where Pakistan stand a good outside chance in all seriousness.

Well it's the same for every Test Playing Nation in their group. The ICC purposefully changed the structure to make it more favourable for Pakistan and India after their early elimination in the 2007 WC. Usually, we all sit here criticising the ICC, but this goes to show they really genuinely care about Pakistan.

3rd ODI Reaction: Pakistan Win =D

A memorable scorecard indeed.

Sorry for the lateness of the reaction guys! I stayed up for the whole game, but immediately had many things to do once the match had finished so couldn't afford to get carried away too much! Obviously I am absolutely overwhelmed as I am sure you are with today's 43 run victory at Christchurch to level the series with 3 to play in due course. We all should be really pleased for Mohammad Hafeez aka Professor for reaching his maiden ODI century in his 61st appearance. Finally he reaches the magical all important 3 figures which will do a world of good for his confidence, especially with it coming in a winning cause. He deservedly received the MOM award.

Shahid Khan Afridi demonstrated his unique nature today which made great viewing. When he fires with the bat like we saw today, he has the capabilities to take any attack to the cleaners and become a true world beater. Never has one doubted that. Although it may only happen in rate proportions, when it does happen, it feels so damn good. Well played BOOMBOOM. That was a breath taking 65 from just 25 deliveries which absolutely dominated proceedings. Nonetheless, I reserve my judgement about him NOT being the best man to lead Pakistan as our chances of success and playing more consistently are significantly easier under a more cool and composed figure. However, individually we must give utmost credit where its due and if the team performs like they did today and makes the equation straight forward, then his mediocre captaincy limitations can be compensated for.

Additionally, the skipper bowled beautifully. He beat the bat on numerous occasions and his variations were coming out really nicely. One can only hope that he has regained his effectiveness and venom in the bowling department which could be a key factor in Pakistan's World Cup prospects.

Umar Akmal also came to the party which was a refreshing sight. His 29 ball 44 helped the innings acceleration at the death. His involvement in the field was fantastic with 3 cool catches and one crucial outstanding run out which probably sealed New Zealand's fate. Pakistani fans and followers can only hope this young tiger has re-discovered his international cricketing brilliance after a sparkling display today. Is this the Umar Akmal we all know? The star teenage attraction which took the world by storm in 2009?

Credit also has to be given to the middle order anchor role stability Misbah Ul Haq provided. Not every player in the team has to be a match winner and we have to notice the contributions of structured methodical players and the underappreciated significance they bring to the team. Misbah played a significant hand and engaged in an important partnership which battled through the potential difficult patches. This enabled the big star power houses to play with freedom, positivity, intent as soon as they arrived at the crease rather than them being exposed earlier in the piece where things would not have been easy without a platform set where they could unleash.

Pakistan will now be looking to consolidate on the good work by winning 2 of the next 3 ODIs which are to be held on the 1st,3rd and 5th of February respectively and subsequently win the series too. Will this thrilling tour come to a series decider on the 5th at Eden Park? Watch this space and watch out for the cornered tigers!

Good News: Pakistan's premier spinner Saeed Ajmal will be fit and fully available for selection in the 4th ODI. He is a key part of our plans. It's important they draft him into the starting line up somehow. Squad rotation perhaps?

Cool and collective Umar reminded us of his outfielding usefulness

Ahmed Shehzad
Wahab Riaz
Shoaib Akhtar
Saeed Ajmal
Asad Shafiq
Abdur Rehman
Umar Akmal
Umar Gul

Sohail Tanvir

*Just to clarify guys NO captain has been announced for the World Cup when the 15 man squad was announced today. Afridi has been given the message that he has to perform now in the forthcoming series and lead well, otherwise he will be sacked. For now let's get behind him, however if the worst comes to the worst we always have a highly suitable alternative option. Let's see how our beloved Lala responds under pressure. Desperate times require desperate measures.*

*Guys IF Afridi gets an injury before the World Cup, there is a high chance it will be deliberately faked in order to try and save his reputation. I hope even if he is not captain for the mega event, he realises the value and importance of himself in the team and plays in the starting line up nonetheless. For now though he still has the captaincy in his hands for the forthcoming ODI series which commences on Saturday. Waqar Younis has strong disputes and rifts about him as a leader and to a large extent, so do I. At the end of the day we want what is best for Pakistan Cricket in the short and long term vision.*

Mohammad Yusuf’s omission signals the end of an era

PCB has left out experienced middle-order batsman Mohammad Yousuf from the ODI squad which is due to face New Zealand in a 6 match ODI starting later this month. Yousuf has been an integral part of the Pakistan’s middle order in Tests and ODIs ever since he made his debut as Yousuf Youhana in 1998. He is widely regarded as arguably the best batsman Pakistan has produced after Inzimam ul Haq. The omission has left his future looking bleak after he was named in the 30 man provisional squad for the World Cup.
The 36-year-old who has scored over 7500 test runs was left out of the test series against South Africa and New Zealand citing lack of fitness and form. Yousuf was keen to regain his touch but did not perform up to par in the few Quaid-e-Azam trophy matches he played. He later left for Bangladesh to play for the Mohammadens Club in the Premier Division Cricket League of the country.
He has been a vital cog in Pakistan’s ODI middle order and first came into prominence during the 1999 world cup in England where he was one of the star performers from Pakistan but missed the final against Australia (which Pakistan went onto lose) due to a hamstring injury.
Yousuf has an incredible record in the 50-over format of the game. He is the second highest averaging Asian in the one-day format after Sachin Tendulkar at 41.71. He has played a total of 288 one-day games and has scored 9720 runs with 15 hundreds and 64 half-centuries. His highest score of 141* came against Zimbabwe.
Yousuf - Will he bow out with dignity?

On Asian pitches he is a master of milking runs and keeping the run rate going in the middle overs and in a weak Pakistani batting line up he is one of the few who is able to play a long innings. With Younis Khan and now Misbah ul Haq in the team Yusuf’s chances of playing the upcoming world cup look bleak since the selectors will opt for young blood to balance out the squad.
Personally I believe that Yousuf should have gotten the nod over Misbah ul Haq because he is a much better accumulator than the test captain. He does not stall in the middle of the innings where keeping the flow of runs going is very important for a team to post a good total on the board.
Knowing the unpredictable nature of PCB you cannot rule out the possibility that Yousuf will be back for the world cup, but if he is selected it will be a very poor strategy by the selectors who will throw him into the biggest cricketing event after having kept him out of international cricket for so long.
